Inquiry Homework - Week 3, Term 2

The video above shows the devastation caused during the February earthquake in Christchurch.  It was a major disaster for New Zealand.

Can you think of another disaster that has hit our country?? Research one and give 3-5 facts about it in a comment.

Try not to repeat what someone else has said - find something different.

If you can't do this at home remember there are computers at school! Do it in your own time though!:)

  2. THE NAPIER EARTHQUAKE
    * The Napier Earthquake happened on the 3rd of February 1931 at 10:46 AM.
    * The first earthquake measured 7.9 on the richter scale.
    * 256 people died in the Napier earthquake.

  3. pike river mine explosion

    only two miners escaped and 29 died.

    gas levels were to high to send in rescue personnel.

    they did send down a robot and it discovered one of the miners hats

  4. on 21st of february at kaitangata coal mine was hit by an explosion at 8am

    47 men were working that day but only 34 of them died

    the explosion came from a candle that a person who had brought into a part of the mine that had flamable gases in By Cameron AKA the koolest person ever

  5. The Wahine Disaster
    It was a ferry that went between Lyttlton and Wellington Harbour. It sank in 1968, and all up, 53 people lost there lives in the result of it sinking. I sank because of a big storm.

  6. There was a earthquake it was a 7.8 magnitude in the Hawkes Bay on the 3rd of February 1931 at 10:47 am. It killed 161 people in Napier, 2 in Wairoa and 93 in Hastings. Altogether 256 people died and many thousands of people needed medical treatment. In Hastings there was almost 200 buildings that were destroyed. it was one of New Zealands Natural Disasters. Everyone completly rebuilt Hastings and Napier

  7. Tangiwai railway disaster
    at 10.21pm on Christmas eve 1953, the Wellington to Auckland night express plunged into the flooded Whangaehu River. There was 285 on the train and 151 died, the train was full of people returning to family for christmas. Over days after they found present and toys full of mud on the banks of the Whangaehu River. Tangaiwai means weeping waters in maori. From Bayz

    in 1953 on christmas eve 151 people died in NZs worst railway accident.The bridge was washed away in a flood .we saw the monument on the way to the war museum by tarquin

    It hit in march 1988 on February 24 on the north of Fiji tracking south westward to New Zealand. It hit near Vanuatu on the 28 of February. This disaster caused severe damage as it had reached hurricane-force winds

    *last erupetion was between march and september 2000.

    *12 lost their lives.

    *it was made a private snenic reserue in 1953 and more than 10,000 people vist every year.

    *the remainder of the buidings are now are a toureit attraction.

    *sulphur mining was stopped in 1914 when part of crater wall collapsed and landslide destroyed the sulphur mine and village.

    - It had a widespread damage
    - It was at 1.35 p.m. on 2of march 1987
    - It was 5.2 magnitude

  14. The Abbots ford Landslide,
    It occurred on the 8th of August 1978
    it was approximately 5 million cubic meters and caused a loss of about 69 people
